Matty's Story Matty's parents were heartbroken as they watched their son struggle to make friends and join in at school. I CAN's Family Support programme will give more parents like Matty's the vital information and advice they need to help their child progress. Matty's father said recently: "I CAN are the light at the end of the tunnel, the glue that mends families who are at breaking point. Thank you I CAN for giving Matty back his smile."

Ellie's Story By the time Ellie received the help she needed, she was over four and already struggling in school. A speech and language therapist diagnosed her with severe difficulties in understanding language and talking. The waiting list for ongoing treatment for these difficulties is nine months. A child who receives the right help early on has a better chance of overcoming their difficulties and developing normally.

Stephanie's Story Stephanie was falling further and further behind until her fundamental problem with comprehension was addressed. Nine year-old Stephanie had real problems making friends and hated her lessons at school. She became depressed, anxious and withdrawn. Eventually, a teacher recognised that Stephanie had real problems understanding what people were saying. This meant that she found it really hard to follow her lessons and to make friends. Now Stephanie is getting the specially tailored help she needs to understand lessons she is beginning to blossom. She's made some friends, and is doing particularly well in maths and science. Things are definitely looking up for her.

Openreach

A big thank you to Openreach for sponsoring I CAN's Chatterbox Challenge.

Openreach maintains and improves the network that connects tens of millions of premises and businesses to telephone exchanges across the UK. We do so on behalf of our Communications Provider customers, who sell communications-based services to consumers and businesses.

They're also the lead deployment arm of BT's £2.5 billion investment to make the Super-fast Fibre Access available to our customers across the UK. Which in turn means that up to two-thirds of premises should be able to enjoy super-fast broadband services by 2014.

With communication at the heart of its business, Openreach is passionate about I CAN's work, and recognises how critical good skills are to every young child as they embark on life's journey.
